It was another exciting day of rugby 7s at Independence Park yesterday as fans turned up in numbers to support their teams.
The Ascension Day 7s tournament was a success finishing off with a U-20 final, women’s and men’s finals.
For the new U-20 inclusion, Shepherds Rugby won the final beating Ifira 17-12 in a nail-biting encounter. Both teams displayed entertaining rugby and for a young age, they capitalized on their opportunities well and played well to their game structures.
Shepherds opened the match with a try and converted, Ifira lifted intensity and replied with two quick tries under the post and converted. Just seconds to full time Shepherds replied with an equalizer as both teams drew 12-12 at full time. The match went into extra time and saw Shepherds run away with their winning try to take home the U-20 trophy.
Ovins win women’s division
Ovins defended their title and took home the women’s division first prize money after beating Ifira women’s 24-7.
Ovins cruised through from the opening whistle as they dominated most possessions and had good ball retention as they continuously ran to their try line.
Ifira women only had themselves to blame for basic handling errors which continuously disrupt their game plan.
Ifira men’s defend title
The day ended with a men’s final as Ifira defended their title to beat Shepherds in a close 12-10 score margin.
Shepherds upset 2022 champions USP in the semi-final to book their final spot while Ifira beat Erakor to book their berth in the final.
