Poor turnout to welcome Commonwealth Games athletes

They made history by winning Vanuatu’s first ever medals at a Commonwealth Games event, but the turnout at the airport to welcome the country’s Commonwealth Games medalists and Team Vanuatu yesterday evening was very poor.

Less than 50 people were present to welcome the very people who were flying Vanuatu’s flag at the Games.

The crowd comprised proud families, friends, coaches, managers, and staff from VASANOC and the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

The Director General of Sports arrived approximately 20 minutes after the arrival of the athletes, who waited for him inside the VIP Lounge.

The Minister of Youth and Sports, Seoule Simeon, was spotted outside a nakamal at Bladinere Estate some 20 minutes prior to the team touching down.

Daily Post was at the airport and confirmed that there was no Minister nor any of the Members of Parliament present to welcome the athletes.

With two medals and a handful of Personal Bests from 18 talented and determined athlethes, who are supported by dedicated officials, Team Vanuatu deserve nothing less than a heroes’ welcome.
