Police brutality. We’ve all seen the video, read the comments and shared our opinion on the matter. We here at the Newsroom attempted to quantify this controversial topic by asking social media users what their thoughts were on ‘how these officers should be disciplined?’ through a survey.
After four hours there were 240 votes for dismissal, 159 votes for suspension and 55 votes for a written warning.
The majority want these men who swore an oath to protect the law and the citizens of this country to be removed from the Force, but there is a growing number that believe that these officers should be protected nonetheless.
While we watch from our phones, it’s easy to give a quick verdict on the matter and as from the results of the polls, it’s a clear distaste for those actions. But for those who feel that what boys in blue did was justified, I do not support that, but I support your right to make that statement.
I’m not going to lie though, most of the unemployed youths who get drunk on a bottle 40 when it’s 38 degrees in the middle of day and are high on marijuana as well will usually get up to no good by 5pm.
By the way, the above is not exaggerated, that was four boys outside my place just a few days ago.
Then last week I visited an elderly couple who lived alone, they were being harassed constantly for no reason by a couple of inebriated youths, from urinating in their yard to sharpening bush knives against the road as a visual threat.
I’m certain that many of you reading this have your own stories of running into drunk youths who are too high to know what they’re doing or too drunk to stop.
My point is, we should start looking at preventative measures.
What are we doing about these troubled youths who have way too much time on their hands?
What are we doing about the drug epidemic that has continued to grow in every street and feeder road of this country?
As for the police, classes on how to defuse high-stress situations without jeopardizing the integrity of the badge would be very helpful. Self-defense classes teach humility and how to engage only when it is absolutely necessary would go a long way with the Force as well.
It’s difficult to take sides on this one even though for many it seems like a no brainer, so how about we leave it to the police and hopefully they consider our suggestions on how to produce more humble cops and figure out to tackle the marijuana drug trade that is turning our young men into dangerous thugs.
A quick side note before we wrap this up, regarding the video in general, the idea was good. You wanted to bring about positive change (I hope that was your intention) and on that note, I advise more of you to take similar videos, this could serve as a deterrence for future crimes and you will also be assisting the police when you’re filing a complaint.
