The reason for the arbitrary deportation of the University of the South Pacific vice chancellor Professor Pal Ahluwalia and his partner Sandra Price is pretty straightforward.
It’s because he did not kowtow to the mob in power in Fiji.
He had the audacity to do what he was appointed to do and that is to ensure good governance at the premier regional university.
That entailed exposing the corruption, mismanagement, the culture of entitlement — in short, the rot — under the previous administration.
This is what the mob in power in Fiji found unpalatable because the old administration was made up of its own lackeys.
The deportation is a drastic attempt to bury the truth regarding bad governance at the university.
An earlier attempt to suspend the vice chancellor had failed when the university council had overturned the suspension and reinstated Professor Ahluwalia.
The Fijian government has damaged its reputation with the arbitrary, undignified deportation of a respected university leader.
