Dear Editor,
Please allow me space to voice my concern in regard to the above subject matter.
It is understood that the old prison house at Stade Low Risk Centre was formery built by the French Colonial Government way back in 1960s.
It’s over 50 years now, several years ago, following an inspection made by New Zealand Construction Engineers; it was advised that the old decayed building was no longer suitable to house the inmates.
Based on this advice detainees who were locked up there in felt their lives were at risk especially in the event where there is an unforeseen powerful earthquake.
Their vital concern reached a point where in the year 2008, among other reasons, detainees at Stade centre made a decision to set fire on this old building with the expectation that the Government at the time would seriously take the initiative to locate a safe place for them to move in.
However, all the inmates involved in the incident were subsequently prosecuted in court for their action. Whatever happened, the bottom line is that this long standing matter has not been resolved until today. Fellow inmates still need a safe and comfortable building in which they may feel secure and at ease to serve their sentences. After all detainees themselves feel they are part of a forgotten community as not much attention is paid to prepared requests.
In view of the above points, may I take this opportunity to appeal one again to the authorities responsible to consider the issue and possibly carry out urgently the intended prison facilities plan at Etas. Please give this new penitentiary project first priority for the sake of the inmates’ safety and well being.
Thank you.
