Vehicles without road documents, using additional lights seized

Some vehicles in Port Vila have been seized by the Police Traffic Unit for not having valid permit and license documents and using additional unauthorised lights on public road.

The vehicles were seized during last weekend’s road checks.

It is an offence under the Road Traffic Act to drive without essential traffic documents and also an offence to use extra lights, apart from the vehicle’s normal lighting.

Drivers of those vehicles that were seized paid a fine before their vehicles were released, according to the Vanuatu Police Force (VPF). VPF said in a statement that many drivers are still confused with the two documents. A driving license gives person to driving legally on a public road while a driver’s permit confirms authorisation as a public transport.

Reflection from additional lights used can cause accidents, said VPF.

Meanwhile, pedestrians or road users are reminded to look left, right and left again to see if no vehicle is approaching before crossing the road.

VPF conveyed that a student from Tebakor was hospitalized recently because he did not apply the five golden rules for crossing the road.

School children are reminded to be cautious when walking along the pedestrian path to school or when crossing the road.
