Malapoa College, has taken the lead to improve the capacity of its human resource by creating an employment contract for its workmen, something never done since the birth of the institution in 1966.
The college has eight workmen. Considering the huge land mass, almost seven hectares of land the college occupies, less number of workers has contributed to the current poor physical environment of the school, said Principal Reginal Garoleo.
Just this year the college recruited another eight increasing the number to 16. A foreman, a carpenter, plumber, electrician, handyman, boarding master, bursar, librarian, secretary, driver, two female cooks and four securities signed contracts this week.
While teachers are responsible for a school’s academic success, the school trust its workmen to care for the infrastructures or properties as buildings, chairs and desks. The new employees would begin work on Monday next week.
The contract is governed by and constructed in accordance with the national laws and the parties agree to submit to the non-inclusive jurisdiction of the courts of Vanuatu.
It outlines the responsibility of each worker, sets how they should work and conduct themselves in the school and also define privileges as annual leaves, child allowances and housing allowance subject to the school board’s approval.
The Daily Post understands that never in a school than Malapoa have workmen labour according to an employment contract and never has a school pay its workmen’s overtime.
The Director General of the Ministry of Justice and Community Services, Mark Bebe, beautifully drafted Malapoa’s governing system. DG Bebe has also help drafted policies for various departments and ministries.
Taris Charley who was the school librarian for 32 years on behalf of all workers acknowledged the school principal for the idea for some of the workers have served without security the previous years.
Malapoa College is grateful for DG Bebe and Chairman Salong who assisted in developing the contract documents.
Principal Garoleo believes the agreement between the school and employees would change the physical environment sooner and improve the spirit of teaching and learning in the school.
