Vanuatu leading the way on Malaria Elimination in the Pacific

Since 2010, Vanuatu has achieved an impressive 95% reduction in malaria burden.

Last year there were just 502 malaria cases nationwide and there have been no deaths since 2012. The few remaining malaria hot spots are in the three provinces of MALAMPA, SHEFA and SANMA, with 94% of cases on the islands of Malekula, Santo and Epi. Despite major damage and disruptions caused by Tropical Cyclones Pam (2015) and Harold (2020) as well as the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Vanuatu is still on track to reach zero local cases of malaria by the end of 2023.
