Untrained teachers teaching in both English and French primary and secondary schools can at last be formally recognized through the Untrained Teachers Project (UTP).
Country Coordinator UTP, John Atkins Arukelana says the Ministry of Education and Vanuatu Teaching Service Commission are aware that a number of degree holders as well as a few masters holders who have been teaching in schools for as long as ten or more years without formal teaching certification. He says the University of the South Pacific will be running the training, in both French and English beginning in the next semester.
“The training is funded by the Ministry of Education. The aim of the training is to equip teachers with the essential knowledge, skills as well as the attitude in how to teach,” Arukelana says.
“The training comprises eight courses leading to the Graduate Certificate in Education. This qualification will, without doubt, raise the standard of their performance.
“This is in line with the Ministry of Education plans and continuing efforts to raise the standard of teacher performance in the classroom. Secondary, it is a preparation for the implementation of the new TSC Act (licensing of teachers)”.
Arukelana says data from the Ministry of Education shows that there are potential candidates for the training programme and letters are being sent to invite them to apply to participate in the two-year training programme which begins in Semester 2, 2015.
“If you are interested, please complete the Ministry of Education application form and return it as soon as possible,” he says.
“The application form will be used to inform the Ministry of Education and Teaching Service Commission and USP that you the applicant wish to upgrade your qualification through this training beginning next semester.”
