The Vanuatu Meteorology and Geo-Hazards stated that at 11:00am local time today, a tropical low (997 hPa) was located near 8.9S 169.8E, about 600 KM northeast of Torres. Winds at centre of the system estimated at 30 knots. The system is slow moving. The tropical low is positioned well outside of the Vanuatu tropical cyclone tracking map, and well outside Vanuatu's Area of responsibility.
The potential for the tropical low to become a tropical cyclone within the next 24 -48 hours is moderate to high. The projected path of the system will take it through Fiji and Vanuatu. This means that at this time, based on the forecast track, thesystem does not pose any threat to any island of Vanuatu. This may change as the system develops further, and rest assured that the Vanuatu public will be well informed if the system changes its track.
As the system is well outside Vanuatu’s Area of Responsibility, the Vanuatu Meteorology andGeo-Hazards cannot issue numbered tropical cyclone information, advisory orwarning. It will only do so when the system reaches Vanuatu’s Area (12S to 23S and 160E to 175E), and that the onset of gales or stronger to any island ofVanuatu is possible within the next 24 - 36 hours.
The Vanuatu Meteorology and Geo-Hazards Department operates 24 hours a day, and continues to issue all weather forecasts and warnings to Vanuatu’s population.
