People on most islands in Vanuatu face difficulty in handling health emergencies, getting their goods to market or send children to school because of poor transport services and communities are isolated by distance.
Although road connectivity is a key component of rural development, these roads are not regularly maintained like those in Port Vila that are sealed.
People on the island of Tongoa, the main island in the Shepherds Group, are now using their new cement concrete road just after its completion.
The cement road begins from Lumbukuti to Panita Village. The development was made possible by funds from the government and support from the island’s Member of Parliament, John Vacher Amos. The equipment were shipped to the island via LC Urata.
Concerns to upgrade the road was made to the then Minister of Infrastructure and Public Utilities, Tony Nari, by the MP. The community on the island supplied human power.
Tongoa has more than 10 villages. This road connects the villages to the Tongoa Airport and seaport.
