Community spokesman Ben Tanghwa from Lolobinagnua village in Ambae said, “They came and told us we had to leave. Now we’re waiting for word that a ship has come for us.”
Alphonse, 70, is not thrilled about the prospect of leaving Ambae during the evacuation. “I’ve left the island before,” he said, “just four months ago. But not like this.”

In the simplest terms, this is the essence of the people of Vanuatu. No one doubts the necessity of their departure, and the evacuation is proceeding in a calm, orderly fashion so far.
But the human cost of having their lives uprooted is written in the face of every Ambaean.
