Jason AbelSchools in SHEFA Province will be conducting a health Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) trial during the Term 1 two weeks’ holiday period.
This has been confirmed by the SHEFA Education Office (SEO).
According to SEO Principal Education Officer (PEO), David Naviti, this will assist schools who have submitted their SOPs after the Ministry of Education and Training’s submission deadline.
The SOPs deadline lapsed on Friday last week.
Mr. Naviti mentioned that the holiday is an opportunity for all schools to engage in their SOPs as the country prepares for any possible second wave of COVID-19 outbreak.
“The holiday will allow schools to monitor their SOPs guideline and if need of any adjustments, then they can apply changes before Term 2 begins,” he said.
“If the situation eases, then SOPs will be relaxed. However, if there are any second wave outbreaks within the communities or in schools, then SOPs will be in full effect.”
With the country experiencing a new normal of education curriculum operations within all provincial schools in relation to COVID-19, all schools are required to meet their health SOPs guidelines when providing educational services for its students once the Ministry of Education approves their submissions.
To date, Deputy PEO Joe Kalotap stated that over 80% of schools submitted their SOPs with over 50% approved. He acknowledged all parents for their patience and support during the curfew in assisting students home school packages.
It has been over two months since school operations in Port Vila and SHEFA Province stalled student movement within their compounds.
A few schools awaiting the Ministry of Education’s approval commented that they should receive the green light this week to resume classes.
Schools who had kickstarted normal classes under SOPs stated that they are adapting to the new normal, with a lot of students excited in trying out and adjusting to the new measures.
PEO Naviti advises all parents to understand the purpose of the SOPs and not to panic during the new adjustments.
He added the World Health Organization (WHO) approved that for children aged 12 and below, wearing face masks is optional in schools.
Mr. Naviti appealed to schools who have yet to submit their SOPs to do so, without further delay.
