Rainfall expected over Vanuatu until Saturday

Vanuatu is expecting cloudy, showers and rain with possible thunder over the group, until the weekend.

Rain, showers with isolated heavy falls and possible thunder over TORBA, PENAMA, SANMA, MALAMPA, SHEFA and TAFEA province today, according to the Vanuatu Meteorology website.

Principal Scientific Officer (PSO), Ellen Luke, who is also the Weather Forecaster explained that an area of trough lies over the Southeast of Southern Vanuatu. Another trough area lies West of the group extending south. This resulted in the cloud development.

“We will continue to expect cloudy condition and brief showers. The intensity of rain could be high in some areas, while some will experience brief showers or isolated showers," Ms Luke explained. 

The Met Office has issued a severe weather warning for isolated heavy rainfall which might cause flood for low lying areas.

A severe weather warning is current for isolated heavy rainfall over Vanuatu and a strong inland wind warning for Torba islands.

The Weather Forecaster also noted that a has now established.  It is a contributing factor to areas of trough, cloud development and showers. She further explained that this will bring a lot of above rainfall over the islands, which could result in flood and river overflow.

Ms Luke cautions people living in low lying areas or beside rivers of possible flooding.
