Most areas and villages around Port Vila and Efate are currently facing power outages and communication network disruptions.
UNELCO, the main electricity supplier in the country, has prioritized restoring power to commercial areas such as Port Vila town, which includes essential services like shops and banks.
Once power is restored to these sites, the company will then work on fixing electricity for suburbs and villagers outside the town. However, they stated that a particular time cannot be confirmed for when all the fixing will be done.
“The work depends mainly on the weather, as the workers’ safety is also our priority and we cannot put their lives at risk to fix the electricity in unstable weather such as this,” the UNELCO team said.
“Because of the poor weather condition, we cannot speed the work as we need to take precautions as well.”
They urged the public to see this as a lesson. “Next time, when information is given for people to cut down tree branches near electric poles and wires whilst preparing for cyclone, do it,” they said.
“It will help a lot in avoiding situations such as this.”
Telecommunication coverage for both Digicel and Vodafone are down as well for most of the islands in the country.
Digicel and Vodafone both reported that they are aware of the issue, and that their technical teams are currently working on solving the problem.
However, similar to UNELCO, an exact date of when these communications issue will be fixed cannot be confirmed at the moment.
This is because it requires a lot of work, as relayed by Digicel.
With the issues of both electricity and communications, some offices had open their doors only for half of the day yesterday.
Communications between Port Vila and the northern and southern islands of the country are down as well.
Customers are advised to be patient and wait for SMS notices from the two telecommunication companies when the network will be restored.
