Prime Minister Charlot Salwai has expressed his appreciation to the people of Maewo for the support of their Member of Parliament, Ian Wilson, for his coalition government.
“I wish to thank you the people of Maewo for your support during the January general election and your participation in the election when you voted in the Honorable Member of Parliament for Maewo Ian Wilson,” the Prime Minister said in his address to the people of Maewo when he launched the telemedicine project at Naviso, East Maewo.
“I wish to thank you because you elected a Member of Parliament who can recognize what we need to redirect this country to a better road. He was elected independently, but he showed his commitment to supporting the formation of the Government we have today.
“The decision the people made in the last election is that they wanted change which more than 2/3 -37 Members of Parliament are new members. This reflected the wishes of the people throughout the country for change, when they voted in the election showing that they wanted a change for the country.
"They wanted a new direction and I wish to thank you for voting for what you wanted which is change. Thank you for electing the Member of Parliament,” the Prime Minister added.
“And who can dream that in a situation we have after the election when no political party won many more seats from the other parties.
"Not even two parties won many seats enough to form a coalition to run a government, but this government has almost 20 parties.
“Who can imagine that these parties can come together and form a stable government like we have today after the history we came through, the history of political instabilities, that we have come through to today.
“Every time we sing our national anthem ‘Yumi (we), yumi (we), yumi (we)’, it is we who must come together and show through leadership, which political parties have done by committing themselves, sacrificing themselves to leave their political interests aside.
"And the Members of Parliament must leave aside their own political interests because they recognizing the importance of putting this country back on its right path.”
“We must establish the stability of the government because that requires a strong majority so it can address the issues that are destabilizing and causing changes in government.
As a result governments have not been able to perform to their best to delivery services the people expect it to do.
“The issues you the people of Naviso have with lack of communication is the result of situations with governments in the past.
"Your decision to election your MP has meant that this government with 38 members can carry out reforms that need to be made to set this country back on the straight path that it is supposed to be on,” he encouraged the people of Maewo at Naviso village.
