Following the recent graduation event of the National University of Vanuatu (NUV), Prime Minister (PM) Ishmael Kalsakau has expressed his admiration for the University and its students. He commended the students’ courage in enrolling in locally offered university programs that incorporate bilingual and plurilingual content in English, French, and other languages.
“I salute the courage of the students to have chosen to enroll in university programs offered locally but with a bilingual and often plurilingual content in English, French, and other languages,” PM Kalsakau stated. “I commend their efforts to have persevered in their studies despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic from 2020 to 2022 and their patience in waiting to receive their internationally recognised qualifications. I also salute the efforts of our young NUV to develop its infrastructure, faculties and schools, staff, and research capacity.”
In April 2023, a total of 235 students graduated from NUV, earning degrees such as Bachelor of Tourism and Hospitality, Bachelor of Economic and Social Administration, and Master of Economics and Social Sciences. The PM was the guest speaker at the university’s first-ever graduation ceremony since its establishment in early 2020.
Reflecting on the significance of NUV’s establishment in 2020, PM Kalsakau expressed his pride in participating in its inaugural graduation ceremony. He remarked, “In 2020, the establishment of the NUV marked a milestone. I am very proud to take part in its first graduation ceremony for the Bachelor’s and Master’s programs conducted in partnership with overseas universities”.
The PM also responded to the Vice-Chancellor’s call for increased government support to foster the growth of NUV.
“Rest assured that I have heard the Vice-Chancellor’s call for more close assistance by the Government to its only national university,” he said. “As Prime Minister, I will consult with the Minister of Education and Training and his team to ensure that our highest institution of teaching, learning, and research, or what I would call the ‘Knowledge and Scientific Pillar’ of the nation (NUV), receives the attention it deserves in terms of resources to guarantee its growth and fulfillment of its mission for the benefit of our youth and nation.”
During the event, PM Kalsakau acknowledged the presence of partner universities and expressed gratitude to them. “I also want to express my thanks to the partner universities working with NUV and the team of academics,” he stated. “Thank you for your hard work and dedication to nurturing a new generation of leaders for our country.”
