The Opposition has criticized the Minster for Internal Affairs, Charlot Salwai, who ordered the termination of all temporary workers in the Luganville Municipality describing their terminations as not in line with the Act, while he approved four new appointments based on the requests of the Councillors.

In his letter of October 29 to the Mayor of Luganville, the Minister said, “It has come to my knowledge that the Luganville Municipal Council made some temporary recruitments inconsistent with the Act.

“I hereby instruct you to terminate immediately all temporary recruitments within the Luganville Municipal Council”.

On the same date of October 29, the Minister wrote another letter to Mayor Vuti in line with his request for the Minister to recruit new workers to the Luganville Municipality.

The Minister said, “Following the request of the majority of the Councillors of the Municipality of Luganville, I hereby give my approval to make the following recruitments:

• Tuku Elton to be recruited as Deputy Town Clerk

• Elvis Bulekuran Molwak to be recruited as Social Affairs Officer

• Gilles Buleuru to be recruited as Planner and

• Sergio Koroka to be recruited as Building Inspector.

While the Minister’s letter said he made the recruitments based on the requests of the majority of the Councillors themselves, the Opposition Office claims the recruits were all political appointees from political parties forming the current Coalition Government.

The Opposition Office describes the recruitments as “hypocritical” and contradicts the Prime Minister’s stand not to entertain political interference and corruption in his Government and all semi-government institutions.

The Opposition Office says, “The minister’s action does not reflect good governance, accountability and transparency which have now become mere lip service by Government leaders.

“Some local authorities including Luganville Municipality are still struggling to provide service delivery to the population in the Northern Town, and the Minister’s action to recruit new workers based on political affiliation and not on merit, won’t contribute in any way towards improving service delivery but chaos on top of chaos in the Council”.

The Opposition Office has called on the minister to resign from his post or it would ask the prime minister to terminate him in the spirit of good governance.
