The Nagriamel Movement is now affiliated with the People’s Progressive Party (PPP).
This came about after the President of Nagriamel, John Lum, performed a custom ceremony yesterday to the President of PPP, Sato Kilman at Beachfront Resort in Santo.
Present to witness the ceremony was the Nagriamel Member of Parliament (MP) Joshua Pikioune and chiefs from Fanafo village.
MP Pikioune was the former Minister of Lands under the Loughman coalition government. He signed a Memorandum Of Understanding (MOU) with MP Bob Loughman to form the new government after the snap election, however their attempt to form the new government was unsuccessful.
With the custom ceremony that was performed, Pikioune is expected to sit on the government side during the first sitting of Parliament in March, which means the number of MPs on the government side will increase to 31, while the Opposition number of MPs will be reduced to 14.
The Opposition bloc previously had 22 MPs, but this was reduced after MP Jay Ngwele defected from the Opposition with six other MPs.
To date, Loughman said MP Ngwele and these other MPs are no longer members of the Opposition, and the government side has not formally recognised or sign a MOU with Ngwele’s bloc.
It is expected that Ngwele and the other 6 MPs are going to be seated at the centre of the Parliament Chambers during the first Parliament sitting.
According to the Secretary General and Spokesman of Nagriamel, Jeff Patunvanu, the idea for the movement to affiliate had begun initially during the rebellion.
When asked why the movement is just acting on the idea now and why PPP in particular, his response was, “times are changing, we have the right to join any political party we desire”.
“We believe that PPP is the right party for the movement to affiliate to because it has been helping a lot of people,” he added.
He also mentioned that another reason why the movement is affiliating with PPP is to fulfill the wish of their people’s.
“In the last election, most of the Nagriamel supporters had voted for Mr. Kilman, thus that is one of the reasons we are affiliating with PPP,” he said.
Mr. Patunvanu stated that the way forward now that the movement has affiliated with PPP is to work on fulfilling the plans that have been set in place and not yet fulfilled, because members of the movement have been moving around a lot between other political parties.
