More than 1,000 in Luganville yet to receive COVID-19 vaccine

Mr Liwuslili encouraged people in east Santo, Canal Fanafo, Malo and South Santo who have not yet receive their first dose to go to the NISCOL Terminal and get their first doses

More than 1,000 eligible people in Luganville, Santo, have not yet received a COVID-19 vaccine.

SANMA Rural Health Promotions Officer, Casimir Liwuslili, said around 324 people in Luganville Town did not turn up for their second doses last week and more than 1,000 have not yet received their first doses of the vaccine.

“This is a big number if there is COVID-19 community transmission in Luganville because it will cause big damage,” Mr Liwuslili said.

He said the people who have not turn up for their second doses were among the first group of people to get the vaccine in Sanma.

“Our worry now is on the Luganville population. Luganville is the gateway for SANMA Province. If borders reopen, we are not sure if Luganville is safe enough.”

He said many of these people who did not turn up for their second doses came from all the four wards in Luganville.

Mr. Liwuslili is asking community leaders in the town to please encourage community members to get the vaccine.

“It is a must for the people who have not turn up for their second dose to please come down to the NISCOL terminal and get your second dose in the coming days,” he said.

The Risk Communication Assistant at SANMA Rural Health, Rayline Tavoa, said there is enough vaccine doses in stock and people who have missed the date for their second doses can still come back for the jab.

So far more than 32,000 people in SANMA Province have either received their first dose of the vaccine or are fully vaccinated against COVID-19 since the start of vaccination in August.

Mr. Liwuslili said COVID-19 vaccination is still open at the NISCOL Terminal in Luganville. In rural SANMA, the Sanma COVID-19 vaccination team has begun delivering second doses in east Santo and will then move to Canal Fanafo, to Malo Island and South Santo.

People in east Santo, Canal Fanafo, Malo and South Santo who have not yet receive their first dose of the vaccine are asked to come to Luganville at the NISCOL terminal and get their first doses.

Community leaders are urged to encourage community members to get the vaccine.
