Minister confirms works unit will stay on Gaua

Torba MP Dunstan Hilton

Member of Parliament

for Torba, Dunstan Hilton, is pleased that the heavy works unit currently on Gaua Island in the Banks Group will remain on the island.

During question time in Parliament last week the MP for Banks and Torres Groups inquired of the Minister of Infrastructure and Public Utilities, Esmon Saimon, if it was true that the works unit would be moved out of Gaua to nearby Motalava Island, also in the Banks Group.

In his answer to the question, Minister Saimon confirmed that there was no plan to move the machineries out of Gaua and that the unit would remain on the island and continue with the road maintenance work it is currently undertaking.

MP Hilton says that he asked the question of the Minister because of reports coming from Torba that the Government was going to move the heavy works unit of Gaua to Motalava. He said the news disturbed him because the roads on Gaua had not been repaired for a long time and badly needed fixing.

The MP added that he was satisfied that Government had now confirmed that the road maintenance unit would not leave Gaua and continue to complete the road repair work.
