Negotiations and discussions are currently underway for over 1,000 settlers who are currently living in settlements around Luganville area in Santo to receive leasehold titles by the end of 2023.
These settlement areas are namely Sarakata, Chapuis, Pepsi, Solomon Hills, and a few other surrounding settlements around Luganville. The Deputy Prime Minister who is also the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Sato Kilman, and his cabinet, along with a few other officers from the Department of Lands in Port Vila and Santo, met with the people living in these areas yesterday and today to confirm this to them.
According to the Legal Advisor in the Deputy Prime Minister’s office, Jean Pierre, the main reason for this is to address the government’s plan in providing service delivery to rural areas, and Luganville in particular, as Vanuatu’s second town.
He added that this is a win-win situation, given the fact that the municipality and the government will in turn receive property taxes from it.
