Thousands of kindergarten children throughout Vanuatu supported by their teachers and parents made the National Kindies Day, Friday, June 12 a very special day.

In Port Vila’s six kindy zones this year, it was decided that the different kindergartens hold their own program of activities to mark the day.

Nearly 100 children from Kawenu Kindy and Pikinini Playtime kindy came together for a full morning of fun and games watched by parents and friends.

Carol Batten of Pikinini Playtime said kindy teachers in Port Vila decided on separate programs this year because the combined event last year at Saralana Park was too big and it was difficult to control the children. Her comment was confirmed by Rolin Tanga of Central School Kindy.

At the Central School, the program was staged for children of the zone 6 kindergartens where about 300 children from the kindy of Central School, Vila East, and Seaside communities were hosted. Two other schools in zone 6 — Saint Jean d’Arc and Centreville, decided to hold a separate program for their children.

Rolin Tanga, one of the organizers of the of the Central School event said their morning program included a speech from a guest speaker Cherol George from the Ministry of Education’s Special Needs Unit.

“Her speech was very relevant to the children, teachers and parents because it highlighted the need to pay ‘special’ attention to special needs children as they are special,” Tanga said.

The program also included sandwiches, cakes and soft drinks for the children at the end of the morning before they went off to enjoy an afternoon of fun and games at the Central School sports ground.

Teachers and parents of a small kindy for Mele and Melemaat decided to take their children to join the program at Central School.
