Hello my fellow readers, this week’s Kava Vines feature Nambawan Kava Bar owned by a 39-year-old entrepreneur from Emae, Marius Firiam. This nakamal is located at Nambatu on the premises of Renold’s Nakamal.
Firiam rented a window at Willie Jimmy’s Nakamal at Tebakor back in 2012 to 2014. He started business at Nambatu last month. Currently, he buys kava from Santo Stone Hill. His supplier usually sends about 500 to 800 kg of kava by boat and when the boats are not operating, he send them on plane.
Starting of the business was quite a challenge, they had to renovate and also there weren’t any customers so he expects the business to operate fully running in several months’ time but surprisingly it took up pace in only weeks. With 30kg of kava, he can make VT40,000 to VT45,000vt in one night. The kava business helps better the life of his children. In less than six months he will be adding to the area a bar next to the pool table for customers to enjoy a beer worth VT200.
Firiam encourages young people that whether big or small business is it’s not about how much you make but how you spend.
Firiam has a business partner Albert Riri from Santo and he looks after the financial side of the business while he looks after the operations of the business. They have only one employee who is in charge of the process of the kava juice. He said it’s a new experience for him.
Kazi Metmetsan from Malekula who rented out window number 2 sells kava from Santo and its white kava which is the demand from his customers. It has been a week and a half and the business is really good.
The business helped him finically and he get to make new friends. He has supported some households with their light bills through the business. He pays the kava from his own salary and with the money he earns from kava, he helps different communities in Port Vila. He bought solar lights for Seven Star. He makes 5kg on Mondays to Thursdays and 10kg on Fridays. Kava sell starts at 4 pm and ends by 7pm .
Alina Esau is also a kava seller at Nambawan Kava Bar. She rented out window number 4. She sells kava from Santo. She is doing the business to help her partner pay the bills, school fees and other needs at home. She makes 5-7kg every day and on busy days she makes 10kg. Her dream is to have her own nakamal one day.
There are five windows on the premises and whilst hanging out with my kava drinkers I ask “why did they choose this nakamal to drink kava?”
This is what they have to say:
