Deadly Floods hit Honiara

A government insider told Daily Post that the Vanuatu Government will shortly decide on what form of assistance it will provide to the victims of the worse flood in Honiara,Solomon Islands, and other parts of the country.

Previous Vanuatu governments assistance to the past natural disasters in the Solomon Islands were in the form of funds.

Some ex-students of the then New Hebrides who received their formal education in government, Churches and other Institutions in the Solomon Islands are calling for meetings to raise funds to go towards the victims of the disaster.

Daily Post understands that various Church Organizations in Vanuatu are also gearing up to send assistance to the victims.

Reports say over 20 people have lost their lives in the deadly flood while thousands of Honiara residents are homeless.

Prime Minister's Office Public Relations Officer, Letty Kaltonga, also confirmed to Daily Post that the Prime Minister and the Council of Ministers will shortly decide on what form of assistance to assist the Honiara flood victims with and of what level.

Australia has reportedly donated $AUS50,000 humanitarian assistance while New Zealand stepped in with reportedly $NZ300,000

Other International Organizations are also moving to assist the deadly flood victims in the Solomon Islands capital Honiara.

Solomon Islands was also battered with cyclone Ida which is reported by the Vanuatu Meteorological Services to be over Southern part of Papua New Guinea yesterday morning.

According to the Vanuatu Meteorological Services, the month of April is the end of the cyclone season in Vanuatu.

The Director of the Vanuatu National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) Shadrack Welegtabit, who returned to Port Vila yesterday from some of the worst hit areas by cyclone Lusi that left 10 people dead in Vanuatu last month, told Daily Post yesterday that update report on the cluster ground assessment work will be given to the media today on immediate assistance provided so far and the extent to the damage caused by cyclone Lusi in Vanuatu's Provinces that it passed through last month.

In the Solomon Islands, the government has declared Honiara a disaster area as international assistance are already pouring into the capital Honiara.
