The Vanuatu Government plans to allow 1,500 foreign workers to enter the country under Special Category Visas, free of charge, for a period of 12 months.
The workers will only be allowed to work for legitimate employers.
The Minister of Finance and Economic Management, John Salong, announced this plan in Parliament recently. Minister Salong noted that many manufacturing businesses in Vanuatu were able to survive the economic downturn during the COVID-19 lockdowns.
“We were forecasting a growth of 4.1% in 2023,” he said.
The Minister added that the growth forecast reflects the expected increase in demand following the reopening of the border in mid-2022.
“However, there are reports of challenges in high job turnover, such as the impact of labor drain from seasonal work programs in Australia and New Zealand,” he said.
This attributes to why the government is planning to bring in the foreign workers into the country.
