A fuel pump worth around VT6 million has been damaged after a car drove into the Tagabe Fuel Station and caught fire yesterday morning.
According to a source, the driver of the car went there to deliver food to one of the staff and the blaze started when the driver started the engine of the car.
Employees at the fuel station tried to spray water on the flames using a fire extinguisher but were unsuccessful, as the fire spreads further to the building.
They said they contacted the Fire Fighters but they (firefighters) responded that their vehicle was not working properly.
They believed a mechanical issue led to the fire rather than alcohol consumption by the driver as alleged on social media.
The Fuel Station Manager said they were lucky there were no injuries and the building had not been fully destroyed by the fire. The car was completedy destroyed.
According to the management, the driver has apologized for the incident and they are now in the process to fix the damage.
Forensic officers from the Vanuatu Police Force (VPF) were on the scene yesterday to determine the cause of the incident.
