Morris Kaloran, owner of Shepherd Alliance Party (SAP), which successfully elected the late David Abel to power, has confirmed his decision to contest the Snap Election this year under SAP.
Mr. Kaloran worked for 16 years in senior public service posts, including Directors of Departments.
Taking a break from public service life, Kaloran overcame the lengthy criteria to succeed working for the United Nations in ‘Market for Change’ for six years. He quietly worked behind the scene to see the Port Vila Market House blossom to where it is today; one of the most successful money making institutions of Port Vila to benefit mostly rural women.
While focusing on women the supervisors of the home, Kaloran is looking at creating financial facilities to make it easier for women to borrow money for their 20-vatu sales at minimum interest.
Kaloran’s last post as the Secretary General of SHEFA Province seemed all in order until he was transferred from his Post to head the MALAMPA Provincial Government Council.
Kaloran declined the offer due to a lack of convincing grounds to move while he had set his work plans with his Council to develop his Provincial Council to new heights.
While other senior public servants have sued the Government and won astronomical amounts of money in compensation for wrongful dismissals or terminations, Kaloran has remained silent.
Asked if he may consider doing what his colleagues have done, he looked away and shook his head saying, “Maybe foreigners could sue the Government but I believe that as a ni-Vanuatu, I cannot sue my own Government even if it has wronged me. I believe that any Government belongs to me because our forefathers struggled to set up the Governments.
“I was unlawfully terminated in 2013 and I had solid ground on which to take the Government to court to claim millions for wrongful dismissal.
“However I felt that it was not worthwhile so I resigned in 2014 and under the rule of law, I should have been paid within three months but it took me seven years to be paid my severance. I am patient.”
As his tears started to fall, Kaloran says it would be shameful for him to do what his colleagues have done.
In my entire career as a journalist, this is my first time to see an interviewee shed tears on behalf of those who believed that it was their right to sue their Government to claim their legal rights.
In the political arena, he will be focusing on his academic and professional qualifications in “Community Development”.
Kaloran hails from Lumbukuti Village on Tongoa Island. He is a God-fearing leader and “go getter who inherits the spirit of the nationalist chiefs of Lumbukuti from the colonial era as well as those who in more recent times, successfully contributed to the Freedom of the country from colonial rule on July 30 of 1980.
“I created SAP and my late uncle (David Abel) contested on its ticket and won,” he said. In order for this political party to spearhead a new direction in Tongoa/Shepherds, Kaloran quotes Matthew 6:33; ‘Seek ye first the Kingdom of God and all His righteousness shall be added unto you’.
“SAP is not strictly about the Shepherd Group of islands but about the Biblical King David, a shepherd boy who was mandated by God to become the King of Israel,” Kaloran clarifies.
“This party aims to spread its wings throughout the country”.
His vision targets developing the basis for traditional Melanesian value, wisdom, knowledge and initiative, as well as recognising indigenous power to control Vanuatu’s destiny and mineral resources.
It includes recognise one’s identity, belief and the changes affecting the society and curbing those changes.
The SAP policy touches on the construction of a Community College, supporting the chiefs, work in line with the law, stop corruption, create a special policy to support the struggle for freedom of Melanesian countries including West Papua, Maluku and Kanaky or New Caledonia and others.
“We struggle together for change,” the policy states.
Kaloran has recently been appointed by West Papua Interim President, Benny Wenda, to the position of Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister of West Papua.
The Executive of the United Liberation Movement of West Papua has recognised Kaloran’s historical leadership skills on the West Papua Struggle and appointed him to the prestigious post, which he holds with pride and respect.
