The owner of Milai Ltd, Nicholas Lee, has categorically denied that his cattle died because they were weak as reported by Daily Post during the weekend.
Lee said that his animals were healthy when they boarded the ship at Milai wharf on the island of Santo last week.
He said a cattle that reportedly died during the loading on Santo did not belong to Milai but from a private farm that was also destined for Tanna.
Director of Livestock Department, Lonny Bong said that there were a total of 238 cattle loaded on Santo to be shipped to the National Week of Agriculture on Tanna.
He confirmed that 20 died and 216 managed to arrive safely in Port Vila. The herd is now at Rentapao farm recovering before they are loaded next Monday for shipment to their final port, Lenakel on Tanna.
Bong said the cattle died because they were weakened during bad weather between Santo and Efate.
He said it is the first time that cattle lost their lives during an operation like this but 22 died because of the bad weather last week.
The owner of the vessel that initially transported the cattle to Port Vila, Matai Seremaiah, already confirmed that his barge has the capacity to transport 250 herd of cattle.
