Waste pickers can pick up recycled wastes at Etas dump-site: PVMC

People who have been salvaging reusable or recyclable materials thrown away by others for personal consumption at the Bouffa landfill, Etas area, have been given an okay sign by the Port Vila Municipal Council to continue.

Roger Tari, Health and Environmental Officer said the decision has been signed through an agreement between PVMC and the committee responsible for Etas Community, recently.

Tari explained that first and foremost, Bouffa landfill area is restricted and no one is allowed to enter it except those who are authorized.

“We conducted awareness after awareness, telling people not to go there and especially pick rubbish from there, due to the high risks on their health,”he said.

“People however, deliberately ignored our concerns”.

Having seen waste pickers almost every day at the dump-site picking rubbish and has become way out of control, PVMC uses another alternative to target the issue.

The Health and Environmental Officer says the agreement has allowed waste pickers to pick only reusable or recycled wastes, but not food stuff.

He said one of the reasons why the council has agreed to this, is because picking recycled wastes from the landfill will assist the council by reducing wastes that can be reused from the site.
