Mr Frederic Jeanjean, First Secretary, and Mr Mike Masauvakalo, Coordinator of the Direct Aid Program (DAP) at the Australian High Commission visited Santo recently where they officially handed over assistance to help restore the Luganville Chiefs Nakamal, which was destroyed by Tropical Cyclone Harold in April 2020.
“The Nakamal is a special place that will accommodate the Luganville Council of Chiefs and provide a safe and secure space for different community youth groups in Luganville to come together and conduct educational and cultural activities,” Luganville’s Mayor Patty said.
“The Nakamal symbolises peace and unity in Luganville and the project is even more important given the current pandemic. It will offer a space for people to drop in to meet their friends, provide support and learn from each other,” Mr Jeanjean said.
“Australia and Vanuatu share many people to people links through our connections in sports, churches and communities. Australia recognises the important role played by Chiefs in Vanuatu society, including to support peace and security.”
The DAP is designed to support community-based organisations and groups in Vanuatu. Through DAP, the Australian Government aims to improve living standards of the people of Vanuatu and help promote economic and social development.
