The Vanuatu Tourism Ambassador Programme will sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the ACTIV Handicraft Centre at Number Two Lagoon tomorrow on February 25.

National Coordinator of the Vanuatu Ambassador Programme, Adela Aru says the MOU is the culmination of the work that the Programme has been doing to promote the sale of quality locally made items.

She explains, “In addressing the identification and supply of locally made souvenirs from the islands into the Port Vila market, we are happy that this partnership will provide the opportunity to strengthen the supply chain and push the distribution of quality locally made items into the trade in Port Vila, so that tourists are offered the choice to purchase this as part of their visitors experience in Vanuatu”.

Since its set up in the Department of Trade Building, one of the biggest challenges faced by the Vanuatu Ambassador Programme has been a lack of quality locally made products for tourists to take home as ‘Made in Vanuatu’ souvenirs.

What the Coordinator’s Office has been working on is to set up a supply chain between Port Vila and the islands which produce the souvenirs on s consistent basis in order to meet the local market demands from visitors in Port Vila.

The Coordinator says the importance of the chain link is that it is going to create substantial employment opportunities in the villages for carvers, weavers and painters and potters to make money without leaving home.
