The much-awaited roadworks spanning 20 to 25 kilometers from Rockwater to Enalfat on the Northwest Tanna road are set to commence this week, depending on the weather.
Thanks to the collective efforts of the community and generous contributions from local businesses, a significant amount of VT820, 000 has been raised to fund this essential infrastructure project.
Daniel Talap, the vice chairman of the Northwest Tanna road project and a respected local businessman and owner of Blue Cave, expressed the community’s frustration with past empty promises from government authorities and Members of Parliament (MPs). In response, the people of Northwest Tanna have taken matters into their own hands, mobilising resources to improve their roads without relying on external support.
In a recent development, Mr. Talap, representing the road project, handed over the raised funds to another prominent local businessman from their area, Peter Pata, who owns several businesses, including Landing Craft (LC) Tiwi Trader. The contribution will enable the hiring of Mr. Pata’s 20-ton Volvo excavator for the upcoming road works.
Talap expressed gratitude towards LC Tiwi Trader’s owner for offering a special rate, demonstrating the community’s commitment to completing the road project successfully. To further support the initiative, vehicle owners and road users in the area have pledged drums of fuel to aid in the construction process.
The current undertaking marks the initial phase of the project, with plans to pave the road where necessary during the second stage.
This approach ensures long-term durability and improved connectivity for the communities of the North West Tanna region.
After two and a half years of determination and hard work, the road will reach all the communities in the North West Tanna area.
