After a week following the opening of the 2023 First Ordinary Session of Parliament, the Leader of Government Business announced the withdrawal of 15 out of the 22 Bills scheduled for debate this Session, followed by the closing of the 2023 First Ordinary Session made by the Speaker.
Among the Bills that were withdrawn are significant pieces of legislation, such as the Adoption Act No. of 2023, Data Protection and Privacy Act No. of 2023, Quarry (Amendment) Act No. of 2023, Disaster Recovery and Resilience Act No. of 2023, Digital Safety Authority Act No. of 2023, Electoral Act No. of 2023, Referendum (Amendment) Act No. of 2023, Harmful Digital Communication Act No. of 2023, Agriculture (Amendment) Act No. of 2023, Municipalities (Amendment) Act No. of 2023, Decentralisation (Amendment) Act No. of 2023, Political Party Regulation Act No. of 2023, Charitable Associations (Incorporations) (Amendment) Act No. of 2023, Police (Amendment) Act No. of 2023, and Vanuatu Defence Force Act No. of 2023.
However, despite the withdrawals, seven Bills managed to proceed through discussions and were successfully passed. These include the National Security (Amendment) Act No. of 2023, Statute Law (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act No. of 2023, Revision and Consolidation of Laws (Repeal) Act No. of 2023, Leadership Code (Amendment) Act No. of 2023, Explosives Act No. of 2023, Broadcasting and Television (Amendment) Act No. of 2023, and Business License (Amendment) Act No. of 2023.
Leader of Government Business, Charlot Salwai, who also serves as the Member of Parliament for Pentecost, expressed his gratitude to the Prime Minister and other ministers who had submitted their Bills for consideration during the session.
As he closed the 2023 First Ordinary Session, Speaker of Parliament, Simeon Seoule extended his appreciation to all MPS who contributed constructively to the discussions and supported the Bills that were passed.
This recognition highlights the importance of collaborative efforts in shaping legislative outcomes.
