Crime rate in Port Vila triples

The crime rate in the Capital Port Vila has tripled according to a police source.

The rate of thefts or stealing has tripled while marijuana use has more than doubled according, the police source said. Rape cases are skyrocketing while other crimes such as wife beating, and children related a crime is also escalating.

He said the overall crime rate in the capital is growing out of proportion and getting out of hand.

Daily Post was reliably informed that while the population of Vanuatu is busy preparing for Christmas and New Year festivities, the Vanuatu Police Force Members are also busy tracking down many suspected thefts to bring those responsible to justice.

The same source said everyday a number of thefts cases received by the police in the capital doubles.

Meanwhile, Operation Noel has started and police will be busy around the clock to ensure families and the population of Port Vila, Efate and the rest of Vanuatu celebrate Christmas and welcome New Year 2011 in peace and harmony.

The police insider told Daily Post that with the vast population growth rate, coupled with urban migration and unemployment situation, these have contributed into many crime related problems across the country but especially in Port Vila.
