Council wants bill boards built to specification

Blown against High Risk security fence

Port Vila Municipal Council Town Clerk Toco Mara has said all bill boards set up in and around the Capital have to be built in line with official specification to withstand any strong wind or cyclone.

He made the statement immediately after the giant bill boards belonging to Digicel were blown down during the cyclone this week. “We are concerned that our bill boards do not pose any threat to vehicles on the road as well as people”, he said.

The Clerk said he is not aware of any legal provisions that specify how to erect a bill board. “But I am going to look at the laws to make sure that any bill boards that go up from now on are built according to official specification”, he said.

One of the boards was blown against the security fence of the High Risk Correctional Centre opposite Tropical Market.

We tried twice to get through to Digicel without success. No one answered the phone yesterday afternoon.

Top Signs and Sign Language have distanced themselves from the bill boards saying the bill boards and signs that they erected have not been blown down by the cyclone.
