PM to meet with media authorities on Tiona matter

Prime Minister Moana Carcasses says he is prepared to have the media in the country deal with the matter regarding journalist Gratien Tiona.

He made the comment in a press conference with the local and overseas media in his office Friday morning.

Last week police arrested Tiona and detained him overnight over comments he made on Facebook which are reported to be seditious

Port Vila Municipal seats increase by 3

The Port Vila Municipal seats have increased from 14 to 17 seats. This is an increase of 3 seats.

Explaining the reasons for the increase to local media, minister responsible for the Port Vila Municipal Council, Patrick Crowby, said his decision to increase the seats by 3 is because of the growing population in Port Vila Municipal boundaries which now stands at 39,998.

Education Minister warns VanGov students to perform well or be recalled after Semester One

Minister of Education, Bob Loughman, has delivered a strong warning to the Vanuatu Government sponsored students to ensure to perform well in their courses this semester to avoid having their scholarships being terminated.

In a letter addressed to parents, guardians and the students, with the power vested on him, Minister Loughman said, “Any students who fail any units/courses that they are currently enrolled in from first semester 2013, will be subject to review of the student’s performance and considered to be recalled back to Vanuatu immediately and have his/ her award terminated”.

This has been the case this month with both crews attending separate emergencies at the same time.

Pango Youth wants immediate establishment of Area Council

Shefa Province Secretary General, Michel Kalworai, accompanied by Director of Department of Local Authority (DLA) Cherol Ala and Principle Planner of DLA, Tabi Ben spent half day yesterday at Pango village to make awareness regarding the significance in establishing an Area Council within their community.

Despite differences within the community, a Pango youth spoke out to support the initiative, and confidently said, “I am speaking on behalf of the youths.

Fiji politician scathingly critical of Vanuatu backing for Bainimarama

Fiji’s former opposition leader, Mick Beddoes, says reported comments by Vanuatu’s prime minister during the G77 meeting being held in Fiji are an outrageous affront to the chiefs and people of Fiji.

Moana Carcasses Kalosil has been reported in Fiji media praising the country’s prime minister, Frank Bainimarama, as a strong leader who is providing the sort of leadership the Pacific wants.

Mr Beddoes says such comments should be condemned by all the democratic countries at the G77.

VAL Pacific and Kiwanis sign 10-year race track agreement

Yesterday the chairmanof VAL PACIFIC, Robert Monvoisin, signed off on an agreement with the President of the Kiwanis Club of Port Vila, Mark Stafford, that will ensure that the very popular Kiwanis Charity Horse Races will have a home at the current abattoir site until at least 2023.

Both parties say that they are very pleased to continue to corporate with each other to assist the community of Vanuatu.

Mr Monvoisin said that VAL Pacific looks forward to working in close co-operation with Kiwanis in exploring ways the horse races site can be used for other type of community events.

North milking resources leaving South stagnant

G77 remain puzzled

“Why is it that the South has been the source of raw materials for the North with them growing while South remains stagnant?”

This is one of the main question that still remain puzzling for the largest voting block in the United Nations (UN), G77 who now has 133 members.

Discussions’ relating to this topic was one of the main ones visited by participants of the recent G77 meeting held in Natadola, Fiji early this month.

Electoral Commission announces by-election candidates

The Electoral Commission Thursday announced the names of five people who have been approved to contest the parliamentary by-election on Tanna at the end of the month. The sixth person was given 72 hours to clear certain issues hindering his application before he can be cleared to contest the by-election.

Vanuatu students in Fiji raise late allowance issue with PM

The issue of late release of Vanuatu Government Sponsored students’ allowances have been raised to the Prime Minister, Moana Carcasses when he met Vanuatu students studying in Fiji at the Laucala campus of the University of the South Pacific, in Suva, Fiji early this month. Students expressed their views that this was and is an ongoing unnecessary issue to be raised. While students are fully committed to study, the treatment of Vanuatu Government sponsored students feel as if the Vanuatu Government support had not been genuine.
