VNCW celebrates 33 years anniversary

Vanuatu National Council of Women (VNCW) celebrated its 33 years anniversary on May 15 with the theme “Blong gat yuniti, pis, prosperity, I mas gat rispekt oltaem”.

A church service was conducted at Tagabe Anglican Church to commemorate the occasion.

In his inspiring message, Father Issac Savi emphasised on the importance of respect.

He reminded women leaders and friends that our Founder of Independence, late Walter Lini, not only spoke his famous quote “Respect is Honorable” because he was inspired by the Holy Spirit to say these words.

Sanma election petition dismissed

The Supreme Court in Luganville has dismissed the Election Petition Case No.2 of 2012 on Wednesday and declared that Samsen Sam, Marcellino Pipite, Serge Vohcor, John Lum, Arnold Prasad, Alfred Maoh and Hosea Nevu are validly elected as members of parliament representing the constituency of Santo.
The dismissal of the case came about after Mr Colin Leo, legal counsel for the petitioners, made no appearance and has not provided any explanation to the court or counsel as to why he was not available for trial at that time fixed by the court in his presence and with his agreement.

G-77 and China: A Symbol of Solidarity Among Developing Countries

Reported by Daily Post, Vanuatu Prime Minister, Moana Carcasses travelled to Fiji on May 17 to attend the G77 high-level panel of Eminent Personalities of the South.

When reading this news, I could not help recalling the development history of the Group 77. Working as a counselor in Permanent Mission of the People’s Republic of China to the United Nations (UN) from 2001 to 2006, I myself had close links with the organization.

Lenakel has new council

The Lenakel model municipality now has a new council.

The council was elected this week followed by the re-election of Reginald Tangap as Mayor.

Elected as deputy mayors were, Nakou Samuel and Numanian Yapatuapen Lous.

The election took place at the Lenakel Town Hall.
The Director of Local Authorities, Cherol Ala and the Advisor from the Electoral Office, Mr Martin Tete, were present during the elections.
Mr Tete officiated the election procedures.

MAV meets with Gratien Molsul following meeting with PM

14 May 2013: The executive of MAV has met with veteran journalist Gratien Molsul after the association President Evelyne Toa and Vice President and PINA President Moses Stevens, met with Prime Minista Moana Carcasses Kalosil on Saturday 12 May.

The meeting was to inform Mr. Molsul on the outcome of the meeting with the PM, and to convey the government's position and views on the incident which led to his alleged illegal arrest and detention on Monday 7 May.

Vanuatu to have own oxygen plant

“The purchase and installation of new oxygen plants for our two main hospitals is a vital asset for the people of Vanuatu,” said acting Minister for Health Tony Wright after signing the contract on Friday 17 May 2013.

Following approvals through Council of Ministers for the award of contract on Thursday 16th May, the Ministry of Health signed the 50 million vatu contract with HK Logistics Pty Limited for the procurement, installation and commissioning of the plants.

First woman with PhD in six subjects

Her name is no longer Andrina Thomas but Dr Andrina Komala Lini Thomas, the first ni-Vanuatu woman to graduate with a Doctoral Degree from the University of Waikato in New Zealand in Management, Leadership, Business Administration, Gender, Good Governance and Indigenous Wantok Authority.
She is only the second female with a Doctoral Degree in Vanuatu after she graduated on April 18 of 2013. She hails from Matantas Village in Big Bay on Santo.

Heads of overseas missions to meet in Lenakel

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is bringing together its Heads of Missions next week from May 20 to 22 in Lenakel town on Tanna.

Heads of missions are called back into the country annually to fulfill one of the essential requirements of their job, and that is to report to the headquarters on their achievements and challenges faced in their mission’s fields.

Man freed after daughter refused to give evidence

A man has walked free despite allegations that he has been sexually abusing his daughter on the Island of Maewo.

The man was freed by the Supreme Court that toured the Penama Province this week after the victim refused to turn up in Court to give evidences.

At the court hearing Monday this week, the prosecution informed the court that the victim has refused to appear in Court to give evidences against her father when they approached her on Maewo, Sunday this week.
