PCV missionaries to ‘Go’ beyond Vanuatu following historical signing

A new dawn has risen in the growth and mission development of the Presbyterian of Vanuatu following a signing ceremony with the global mission agency, Worldwide Evangelization for Christ International (WEC).

The historical signing ceremony will pave way for ni-Vanuatu missionaries to go and serve in some of the most hostile regions on earth frequently referred to as the 10/40 Window or the ‘Resistant Belt’.

Founding father visits MSG Secretariat

“It is like a father visiting his child after being away for 25 years,” Ezekiel Alebua, one of the founding fathers of the Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) remarked during his tour of the organizations during his recent visit to Port Vila.

Vanuatu museum celebrates International Museum Day

Saturday, May 18, was International Museum Day, and because the date fell on a weekend the Vanuatu National Museum in Port Vila observed the day last Friday.

The theme for this year’s International Museum Day is “Museum (Memory + Creativity = Social Change)”. To mark the day the Vanuatu National Museum has put on an exhibition which tries to reflect the theme.

Subhead: Vanuatu support gets French Polynesia on UN decolonization list

The UN General Assembly has put French Polynesia on the global body's decolonisation list at a meeting boycotted by France.
The resolution, passed by consensus in the 193 member assembly, was called for by the Solomon Islands and other Pacific states which back the Pacific territory's pro-independence parties.

The vote places French Polynesia on the UN decolonisation list along with 16 other territories around the world, including the British-ruled Falkland islands and the US Virgin Islands.

Private sector wants severance reviewed

The President of the Vanuatu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI), Mr Jacques Nioteau has called on the government to review the severance entitlement period from four weeks to two weeks saying the recent court decision on the issue will affect economic growth.

Nioteau thanked Wilco Hardware for their commitments in pursuing a final legal decision on the severance pay issue.

The VCCI also acknowledges those local firms in Port Vila that gave their generous support towards the appeal case.

MP Moli’s sentencing adjourned over fact disagreement

The sentencing of Luganville Member of Parliament, Kalvau Moli in his obstruction case has been adjourned by the Supreme Court after legal counsels disagree over case facts.

Sentencing hearing of the case, Public Prosecutor vs Kalvau Moli was scheduled for Tuesday this week but MP Moli and his Lawyer failed to turn up to court.
Private lawyer, John Timakata who has been hired to prosecute the case on behalf of the Public Prosecutor told Daily Post that due to the defendant’s absence, a warrant of arrest was issue by the court for Moli.

Hospital staff prepare for new hospital

Both technical and management staff of the Vila Central Hospital have been preparing for the operation of the new hospital building and ancillary equipment which is expected to be handed over to the Government of Vanuatu in May, 2014.

Deficit in general reserve of Vt156 million

The investigative audit into the Vanuatu National Provident Fund (VNFP) by the Australian company, Ernst & Young has found that a deficit in the general reserve of the Fund at Vt156 million was due mainly to non compliance of the VNPF Act.

The primary purpose of maintaining a reserve is that it acts as a buffer and enables the Fund to provide a consistent level of interest to members in years when operating results may vary.

MPP’s loyalty to Natapei’s bloc remains solid

A member of VP’s Natapei bloc in the Carcasses-led government, Melanesian Progressive Party (MPP) has confirmed its solidarity with the government side.

MPP spokesman told Daily Post yesterday that with two parliamentarians inside the current government, they are determined to see the government through its term in office.

“MPP will never support an opposition sponsored motion so the party can assure the Deputy Prime Minister, Natapei as the leader of our bloc in the government and the Prime Minister, Moana Carcasses himself of our support,” said MPP Spokesman, Peter Tulangi.
