Main wharf landowners want recognition

The custom land owners of the Port Vila Lapetasi International Multi Purpose Wharf Development Project valued at Vt6 Billion want the name Lapetasi changed to Emeltaurik to reflect the Efate Island Court decision of 31 March 2009.

“We are not against development in Vanuatu. In fact we are for development. But the name Lapetasi is an imported name according to Pango kastom and we want the name Emeltaurik named after the Development Project,” Pastor Morrison Totar Waibaiat said.

VRDTCA focuses on overhaul of RTCs

Vanuatu Rural Development and Training Centres Association Director Kathy Solomon has started her Non Government Organisation on the road to new greatness based on new policy to upgrade the Administration Procedures in all 32 Rural Training Centres nationwide.

Two members of staff of the VRDTCA; Finance Officer Hanson Waki and part-time Assistant Emmie Nivou have returned to Port Vila following an intensive tour of three Rural Training Centres in Malekula called Uluveu RTC in the Maskelynes, Morobian RTC in North West Malekula and Pektel RTC also in the North West Region of the island.

Annual Presidents and SGs Forum becomes bi-annual meeting

Torba Provincial Council is reported to have taken the lead following this year’s annual Presidents and Secretary Generals (SGs) Forum in securing land for construction of its Area Council headquarters.

The task is one of the four main resolutions of the Forum, and it requires all the local authorities (Provincial and Municipal Councils) to urgently acquire land in the Area Councils to start building at least one Area Council Headquarter or Ward Council every year. This process also requires that the Provincial Councils budget for acquisition of these lands.

Telephone numbering plan and procedures

The Telecommunications and Radiocommunications Regulator (TRR) issued an updated Numbering Plan and Procedures (NNP) on June 18.
The Telecommunications and Radiocommunications Regulator (TRR) is responsible under section 7(2)(d) of the Telecommunications and Radiocommunications Regulations Act–No. 30 of 2009 to “allocate telephone number blocks and other telecommunication systems numbers as administered by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) to service providers”.

Proposed Independent candidate to host ‘Miss Election 2012’

Outspoken woman leader, and proposed Independent candidate for Port Vila constituency, Maryann Bani, will be hosting a ‘Miss Election 2012’ fashion contest that would be staged on July 30 at Planet 107.
Bani said her objective in organising this show is “to promote the quality of local women’s sewing in Vanuatu, foreign fashion boutique and also to promote the health for young girls in Vanuatu as we celebrate the country’s 32 years of Independence, and importantly, as Vanuatu would be going through a general election this year”.

Exemption from Customs Duties on Goods imported or delivered from Bonded Warehouse – Schedule III, of Import Duties Act [CAP 91]
There are two types of exemptions:
1. Standard Exemptions with a validity period of 1 year. This include economic reliefs such as X1 – goods imported for manufacturing or processing; These were covered in the Daily Post Issue of 5th June 2012.
Standard Exemptions also include X66 – goods imported for approved National Development Projects. This is explained in this issue.

Women’s Affairs employ new economic officer

The department of Women’s Affairs this week welcomed on board Esron Vano as its new “economic officer”.
This has put a step forward to stabilizing gender within the department which has a ratio of 2 males and 9 female staff in the main office in Port Vila.
His arrival will assist two provincial officers well as the department on new initiatives to promote and contribute to new ideas and directions for business to benefit women, children and people with disability.

Wells assures lifting of councillors’ suspension

The suspended Deputy Lord Mayor of Port Vila Municipal Council and Vanua’aku Party strongman, Reuben Olul, moved from Vanua’aku Party (VP) to People’s Progressive Party (PPP) last Friday.
He opted to join PPP under the affiliation of Luganville MP and Minister for Internal Affairs George Wells, who joined PPP earlier this year through a custom ceremony to the PPP Leader and Party President, Sato Kilman.
The move by Reuben Olul followed a custom ceremony that took place at Reuben Olul’s home and community at Saratokor in Port Vila last Friday evening.

Vanuatu be careful: Lenelcau

Former Head of State, well-known as the parable man, Jean Marie Leye Lenalcau, has warned Vanuatu to be careful, in a number of national, regional and international issues, confronting the nation today.
Speaking to Daily Post, the former Head of State cautioned the leaders on the issues of sales of land, growing number of foreigners entering businesses reserved for Ni-Vanuatu, and the issue of World Trade Organization.

The 79-year former Head of State and well known politician firstly expressed his concern over what he termed unbelievable massive sale of land.

ACP/EU confirms support for local authorities as Shefa takes lead

The Secretary General of ACP Group, Dr Mohamed Ibin Chambers and Assistant Secretary General of ACP Secretariat, Madame Michelle Dominique Raymond have confirmed their support for Local Authority Association of Vanuatu (LAAV), during a visit to Shefa Provincial headquarter last Friday.
