Nikoletan sorry over killings in Efate

The Chairman of Nikoletan Council of Chiefs of Tanna, Chief Simo Shem said he is sorry to hear of the killings and bad behaviour that are reported to be caused by people from Tanna in Efate because the common bridge is already in place through intermarriages between women from Shefa who have made Tanna their home and women from Tanna who have made Efate their home and beyond.
He agreed that intermarriage is now a common practice throughout the country but such tragedies are not helping to contribute towards inter island peace and harmony.

A hand up for the disabled

If you couldn’t walk, couldn’t use your arms, couldn’t speak for yourself, were mentally challenged, or all of the above, life would be tough. And never more so, than in Vanuatu.
For about 20,000 * ni-Vanuatu who are disabled, this is their reality.
To compound their challenges, there has been no funding for the Vanuatu Society for Disabled People (VSDP) since late last year.
The last they received was from an AFP woman, who sold her vehicle before she returned to Australia. She donated the Vt600,000 she made on the vehicle to the society.

Kalmet says appellant not “Chief Nmak” yet

The Nmak Family Secretary General and Spokesman, Tim Teo Kalmet has called on all people of Erakor who are as concerned as he is regarding the Nmak Chiefly Title to remain calm to allow an appeal court to decide on the declaration.
The Secretary General of the Nmak Family said it is premature for Denny Zachary to call himself “Chief Nmak” because he has not fulfilled the conditions as laid out by the court.

Government contradicts own decision: Bani

The outspoken women’s leader, Maryanne Bani has voiced her concern over the incident, which saw the arrest of West Papuan youth Activists after a short peaceful protest at the Bauerfield International Airport a week ago.
The peaceful protest occurred after the youths learnt from local medis that a Hercules aircraft from Indonesia was going to touch down at the airport, later that afternoon.

Pollution and waste management scrutinised by stakeholder representatives

Legislation against pollution and to promote effective waste management was closely examined by some twenty key government decision makers and NGO representatives last week.
Bills for the Pollution Control Act and the Waste Management Act have been developed with assistance of the South Pacific Regional Environment Programme, SPREP. They were presented by Albert Williams, Director of the Department of Environment Protection and Conservation (DEPC). Enactment should be accomplished in the final sitting of the current Parliament in August.

SKAL Club of Port Vila supports two VIT Students

SKAL club of Port Vila has generously donated a sum of Vt93, 000 to two ni-Vanuatu students to pursue their studies at the Vanuatu Institute of Technology.
Based in Port Vila, this club has 28 members and meets every month, and one of their aims is to financially support students.
The club, which is a non-lucrative club, is part of SKAL International, a professional organization of tourism leaders around the world promoting global tourism and friendship.

TVL participated in making ICT Day a success

On Friday 18th May, a showcase was organised to celebrate for the first time in Vanuatu the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day. The event took place on the seafront and gathered more than 1,000 people. The theme of the day was Women and Girls in Information and Communication Technologies.

8,000 metric tons of Vanuatu fish ‘dumped’ in Fiji

The bait of a more lucrative market and cheaper destination abroad coupled with saturated markets in Port Vila resulted in 8,000 metric tons of tuna caught inside Vanuatu’s EEZ to be ‘dumped’ in Fiji last year.
While findings have drawn in on the absence of a National Fisheries Policy, its Act does require the establishment of a Management policy (individually) within the Fisheries sector.

“Currently as we speak there are fish being in dumped in Fiji,” said the Director of Fisheries, Moses Amos.
