Auckland and Butterfly Trust make Vanuatu donation

Football

A donation of football playing kit and equipment to the Vanuatu Football Federation by Auckland City and the Butterfly Trust has shone the spotlight on football as a tool for health in the Oceania region.

The gear will be handed over to the Vanuatu Football Federation when Auckland City FC take on Vanuatu champions Amicale in the club’s final O-League group match at PVL Stadium in Port Vila on Saturday.

The people, the poll, the government, the president on WTO

Dear Editor,

It has been said that a democratic government is a government of, by and for the people.
I don’t think this is reflected in our election system. The insignificant decreasing minority will always vote for our MPs in our existing system.
I don’t know if a government will want to take an opinion poll or public opinion seriously as there was not a precedent or a proper documentation of a past convincing case matching election result.

Export Scrap (Toti) Metal

Dear Editor,

There is so much more to see than a small view of revenues by applying tax on “Second Hand Goods” which is nothing more than Toti. Thousands of tonnes of rusting rubbish have been exported from Vanuatu and so not only is Vanuatu Cleaner and Greener, all this “Cleanness” and “Greenness” was paid for by overseas buyers of the rubbish. …  IN addition to the investment of the owner, which has been lost, and the sad loss of 35 jobs… other jobs and businesses are affected:
 •Sellers of fuel that has been consumed,
•  the transport of containers to and from the wharf,

Sope promises to put West Papua back on Decolonisation Committee

A veteran Vanuatu politician who has relentlessly campaigned for the freedom of Pacific Islanders, former Prime Minister Barak Sope, is not happy with what the government is doing with West Papua.

“Being an advocate for the independence of Vanuatu, Timor Leste, Kanaky, West Papua and Tahiti it hurts my conscience when I have learnt what the current government is doing in relation to the West Papuan issue.

Disaster Risk Reduction education

Save the Children is supporting the Ministry of Education to investigate how Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) can be integrated into school education programs. A pilot project will work with ten schools on Efate to test an approach for including disaster education in classroom activities along with different subjects in primary schools.

PM to visit new site for Chancery today

The Prime Minister Meltek Sato Kilman Livtuvanu will visit the site of Vanuatu’s new chancery when he arrives here in Suva Wednesday 28th of March for the 18th Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) Leader’s Summit on Thursday and Friday.

Yesterday the MSG foreign ministers were briefed by the Fiji government of the planned development of the site and the security detail that will be employed to provide safety measures and essential services to the area at the corner of Queen Elizabeth Drive and Muanikau Road.

Malampa Travel Call Centre goes from strength to strength

This month, all the cannibalism, culture and customs of Malampa will be showcased to the world. The Malampa Travel Call Centre will be the only representatives from Vanuatu at the Pacific Asia Indigenous Tourism Conference in Darwin, Australia from March 28-30.
Representing the Malampa Travel Call Centre will be the Malampa Tourism Product Development Officer, Edna Paolo, who is looking forward to this exciting opportunity.

Update on the incident in Pentecost.
On Friday the 23rd of March 2012, the police officers who have been deployed to Pentecost negotiated a meeting between Lontar and Bunlap concerning different allegations .The two communities agreed to stage a peace ceremony. The communities exchange a pig and two red mats each to allow movement of people again to the gardens, schools and other areas concern. The chiefs prefer to settle the damages and assault cases in their traditional ways. No criminal case was registered by the Police.
