WHO supports higher Tobacco taxes in the Philippines, expresses concern about upcoming Tobacco exposition

Dr Shin Young-soo, the World Health Organisation (WHO)’s Regional Director for the Western Pacific, has expressed “full support” for the Philippines Department of Health’s efforts to raise tobacco taxes and prices.

“Higher cigarette prices would discourage young people from starting and encourage smokers to quit,” Dr Shin says.

Australia recently passed legislation to increase the cost of a pack of 30 cigarettes to US$ 19.

WHO advocates a tax of at least 70% of retail price. In the Philippines, the tax on the most-sold brand is only about 22%.

PNG views Vanuatu as one of its identical tribes: High Commissioner

Vanuatu is regarded as one of Papua New Guinea’s (PNG) identical tribes within the Melanesian region.

This statement was made by PNG’s High Commissioner to Vanuatu, Brian Yombon-Copio when presenting his credentials to the Acting President, Esmon Simon last week.

“This relationship is made evident through the participation of the two countries in some of the programs of the Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG),” said the PNG High Commissioner based in Honiara, Solomon Islands.

Vanuatu Chamber of Commerce offers free Business Mentoring workshop

A business mentoring workshop will be held in Port Vila starting today to help local business men and women to improve profitability, devewlop new markets and at the same time lead them to become local business mentors themselves.

The two day workshop which starts today and ends on Wednesday 20 will be conducted by Business Mentoring Experts from New Zealand. The workshop is being funded by the New Zealand Government as part of the strengthening of business sector growth for Vanuatu business men and women.

Onesua College opens Francophonie week

International Francophonie Day may fall on March 20 annually but for the Onesua Presbyterian College in 2012 it is one week celebration which kicks off today.

Head of the college’s French Department Richard Jenery informed that Onesua’s 460 students will be engaged in various exciting and educational organised activities throughout the week including Quiz competitions, poems and posters competition.

“More than half of the 460 students study French,” explained the French teacher.

Port Vila public want prepaid meter system

The public of Port Vila have questioned why the Utilities Regulatory Authority (URA) has delayed granting UNELCO Vanuatu agreement or license to introduce prepaid meter system in the capital Port Vila and the surrounding villages.

Some members of the public contacted Daily Post to question why it has taken so long for a government statutory body to grant UNELCO an agreement that will help the masses of electricity users in Port Vila who are ordinary citizens.
