From One Tribe to Another

San Diego Jewish Journal I’m a travel journalist and hard-core travel addict. Even when I return from a trip on the verge of exhaustion, careening around the house from jetlag, I start thinking about where my next trip will be. I long to visit places that have unique cultures and customs. The word “exotic” often pops up in my articles, but only recently have I discovered what the word really means — and I found out in Vanuatu.

Ambassador urges conference to push kava to next level

“I can attest to and confirm that inside this conference room today, there are a number of delegates who have been drinking and consuming kava as a traditional relaxing drink on a day to day basis over the last 30 years and are still very healthy from this drink.

“This is a test to prove that Pacific islands consumption of this special traditional drink has no correlation or linkage to kava and liver failures as allegedly attributed to by the German and EU ban on this product”.

Monday morning was a great morning in Santo. I had been involved in the fishing competition with Gary Young and had a very good time. The crowd was great, the entertainment was first class and there was nearly 2 tons of fish caught over the weekend.

Books from British Friends of Vanuatu presented to Northern District Hospital

At a small ceremony held at the Vanuatu Health Training Institute on Friday 9 March, two cartons of valuable health resource books donated by the British Friends of Vanuatu were officially presented to the Northern District Hospital. The ceremony was attended by about 20 doctors and nurses.

The ceremony was opened by Dr Selwyn Bagu, Principal of the Vanuatu Health Training Institute, which provides further training to nurse practitioners and midwives.

PWD uses new approach to tackle road problems

Around Port Vila over the next few months, you will see quite a few roads being fixed up as the result of an innovative partnership between the community and the Public Works Department. Seven Star, Elluk, Belleview, Pango road works are already underway and with more being discussed and planned. It is part of a new PWD approach – “yumi pul long wan rop” where not just Government funds and resources are being used but assistance offered by communities and individual private citizens.

UMP leaders should reconsider reunion: Sumbe

A Union of Moderate Parties (UMP) strong man from Malo Island in Santo has called on all UMP leaders to reunite.

Mr William Sumbe who joined UMP 26 years ago, in 1986, has held the position of UMP Secretary General for Malo-Santo for 14 years and has once served as the President of the UMP Malo Regional Executive.

Mr Sumbe was among 67 UMP delegates from Malo who attended the UMP National Congress at Eratap on Efate this week.
