Vanuatu woman’s head coach Florian Sam named his squad for the OFC woman’s qualifying competition in Tonga next month.

“After hard training with 22 girls in the last few weeks, today I would like to name my 19 squad players for Tonga competition.”

NDMO assessing Jasmine’s damages in Tafea

Rapid assessment teams from the National Disaster Management Office have been deployed to asses the extent of the damage left behind by Cyclone Jasmine when it battered its way through Tafea Province last week.

Tafea Provincial Headquarters informed that the team has met with the Tafea Provincial authorities yesterday and officers from the province are assisting in assessing cyclone damage.

NDMO teams are attending to all Tafea outer islands that are most affected to get a clearer picture of the destruction caused by Cyclone Jasmine.

LMC property tax outstanding over Vt30 million

While the business community is doing its part to pay off its property taxes to the Luganville Municipality Council (LMC) each year, local residents are very ignorant about their lawful duty in paying taxes for their property and this has resulted in over 30 million vatu outstanding.

This amount is yet to be collected by the council as part of its revenue.

Bus fare increases in Luganville

Luganville public has been forced to accept a bus fare increase on the eve of this year’s academic year.

The bus fare has always been on Vt100 since bus transport was introduced in town and even to the nearby non-urban areas such as Showground, Banban, Palekula area and even to Suranda.

But since the Luganville/Sanma Land Transport Association (LSLTA) was introduced bus fare has increased to Vt150, the same as in Port Vila.
The taxi starting fare has also increased from Vt100 to Vt150.

Orientation begins at Emalus Campus

Orientation for all Foundation students and other students accepted to study at the University of the South Pacific Emalus Campus began yesterday morning with free lunch for everyone until the end of orientation on Friday.

The privilege is a gesture of commitment on the University Administration’s part to show that it understands the students and cares for their comfort.

Philippines education not cheap, but a privilege: Consul

With the ever increasing number of ni-Vanuatu flocking to the Philippines for academic purposes, Vanuatu’s Honorary Consul to Philippines, Sampson Ngwele, has clarified that the education system there is not cheap but it is a privilege not to be abused.

When collecting awards for the second load of Vanuatu Government sponsored students (who are already in Philippines), Ngwele said just because fees are very low at Philippines Government institutions it does not mean the country has a cheap education system.

POLICE BEAT

Police in Port Vila have arrested 3 suspects on Sunday February 12, 2012 at Seven Star areas for possessing and supplying marijuana.
The suspects were further detained until the 13th of February and later taken to the Correctional Centre to be remanded.
And the Drugs Unit have also confiscated 17.200kg of Cannabis plants at Prima Bridge last week.

The Vanuatu Mobile Force will be conducting a 4-day training on driving starting from the 20th -24th of this month for the VMF members.

Regenvanu’s Scholarship applications close this Friday

Member of Parliament for Port Vila, Ralph Regenvanu, has announced that students wanting to apply for a scholarship under the Port Vila Scholarship Scheme should submit their applications before the closing date this coming Friday (February 17).

Application forms are available from the Student Academic Services Office, Emalus Campus, Port Vila, and successful applicants will be announced by Friday March 2, 2012.

The scholarships are open to all Ni-Vanuatu students enrolling in Foundation courses at USP Emalus Campus in Semester 1, 2012, who are residents of Port Vila.
