Ham Lini and WTO

Dear Editor,

Anyone unsure about why Vanuatu should join the WTO would hopefully have heard an interview this morning with Ham Lini on Radio Australia.

According to Ham, the reason why the country should join is that the land divers in Penetcost would get some money. Ham did not explain what he meant but the interviewer assumed he was referring to intellectual property rights; bungee jump operators around the world watch out.

Lottery scammers hit Western Union

Bold scammers have moved the level of scam messages from individuals to targeting international renowned names of Financial Service Providers -and the latest is none other but the Western Union Money Transfer company.

Western Union’s Money Transfer (Vanuatu) Ltd Country Director John Litchfield sent an urgent circulation yesterday, advising the public of a scam message under the Western Union Money Transfer name, cautioning everyone to discard it as it is “100% scam”.

No level playing field for Vanuatu under WTO rules

The premise harped by our officials for Vanuatu’s negotiation package into the World Trade Organization (WTO) is to put us on a level playing field with our trading partners and major world economies such as the US, EU countries, Japan, Brazil, and China.

By being members of the WTO, we can trade goods across foreign borders at reduced or zero taxes, openning potential for trade and access into new markets. It also guarantees us a voice to hold any country no matter how big, accountable for unfair trading practices such as protectionisms etc.

Making the Forum accountable and honest

For years journalists would berate me at the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat for what they saw as the sheer uselessness of the annual leaders meetings and the empty promises they would make each year and then never do anything to implement.

Then one day, one of my many superiors at the Forum Secretariat asked me to review the various communiqués of the leaders’ summits and the results would have been funny if the reality of the yawning gap between what was promised and the facts on the ground were not so wide. The journalists were right!
