Will the PSC Act Amendments take us back to the 1990s?

TIV

In 1998, the aim of the Comprehensive Reform Program was:
“strengthening public institutions and enacting the basic laws to establish the framework of governance; restructuring of the Public Service to improve its effectiveness and efficiency; strengthening the institution of Parliament; strengthening of the legal sector; improving performance of the economy and raising standard of living ” .

Do we no longer wish to aspire to these aims?

Allowances for students partly settled

The office for the Director General (DG) in the Ministry of Education has assured parents and institutions that the allowances for ni-Vanuatu students who were awarded scholarships under the Vanuatu Government have been settled.

In a statement the office of the DG of education confirmed that part of their allowances have be paid and that the balance will be paid once the current extra ordinary session of parliament approves the government supplementary budget for 2011.

Give West Papua MSG membership: Sope

TIV

Former Vanuatu Prime Minister who issued a challenging statement at UN Millennium Summit concerning the West Papuan’s struggle for Independence, Barak Sope, has called on Melanesian leaders to give West Papuans a place in the Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG).

5 patients receive Open Heart Surgery in New Zealand

Plans to have more heart surgeries are in the pipeline after five fortunate patients received Open Heart Surgery in New Zealand and are now recovering.

Dr Griffith who is currently with the patients was pleased with the results of the surgery when he informed Daily Post that the five patients he escorted to New Zealand went through a successful open heart surgery over the last two days.

The five are three females and two young male students.

Four had valve replacement while one had valvotomy, all at the Mercy Hospital in Auckland.

Franco-anglo-phonity banished in a unified curriculum

The USP Open Day opened in a suitably studious manner with a Public Forum devoted to Vanuatu Education Reform and the development of the new National Curriculum.

This is seen in the context of the census revealing that only 82 percent of school age children are actually going to school. The aim is for 100 percent to be pupils in 2015.

PM Kilman breaths air of relief

Prime Minister Sato Kilman, who came to power in December 2 last year, introduced his first bills in Parliament only on Monday this week, exactly eight months and six days after being at the helm.

This is arguably the first time for a government in the history of Vanuatu to be in power for over half a year but its lawmakers could not even pass a single law in the legislature.

That explains the volatile situation Vanuatu politics was in after Kilman toppled former Prime Minister Edward Natapei last year.
