Department of Women’s Affairs organises week long retreat

The Department of Women’s Affairs recently went for their week long retreat at the Nirvana Resort at Pango, the purpose of the retreat was for the staff members to report on their activities since the beginning of the year up to date, and to plan their next six months activities.

Vanuatu taking its international legal obligations to another level– key workshop to build skills opens in Port Vila

The Director of Foreign Affairs informed representatives from various government departments, ministries and civil society that Vanuatu has ratified more than 107 treaties and conventions, and they must collaborate to address the task of making a stock take on the implementation of these instruments.

“We must also take into consideration the contribution of the work of chiefs, churches, civil society and those in rural areas,” Director Kalfau Kaloris  stated in his opening address for the week long workshop.

Paama Sharks clinch Under 15 title

The Junior Paama Sharks have shown that they are a team of high quality cricketers for Vanuatu after defeating the Junior Mele Bulls in style.

The match showcased the best young cricketers in Vanuatu, some of whom will represent their country in next years under 17 Regional Tournament which Fiji will host. The VCA General Manager, Pierre Chilia was very impressed by what he saw from some of the players.

Mele won the toss and elected to field, and it looked to be an excellent decision after Paama lost an early wicket and were 1 down for 7 runs after two overs.

Vala Century the Highlight of Day 2

Assad Vala has become the first PNG player to make a century on the turf wickets of either Amini Park or Colts Cricket Ground since the pitches were launched on 23 July 2010. His 116 off just 59 balls against Japan was the highlight on a day of one-sided results at the Pepsi ICC East-Asia Pacific Division 1.

PNG continued their dominance with easy wins over Fiji and Japan, whilst Vanuatu also had a good day with victories over Japan and Samoa.

MSG visit UN to meet with the Decolonization Committee of 24

The Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) Delegation led by Mr Victor Tutugoro, the Spokesperson of the Front de Liberation Nationale Kanak et Socialiste (FLNKS) visited the United Nations in New York, USA on 20 to 24 June 2011 to meet with the United Nations Decolonisation Committee of 24 (UNC24) and other United Nations agencies. The delegation comprised of Madame Danielle Guanere, a member of the FLNKS association for Parti de Liberation Kanaka (PALIKA) and Ms Barbara Age, Director of the Political Affairs Division of the MSG Secretariat.

Saint Therese awaits completion of classrooms

Saint Therese School in Luganville is still waiting for the Vanuatu Mobile Force to complete two classrooms that were not finished by the US Navy during the Pacific Partnership 2011.

When the US Navy was here in Santo providing health services and doing maintenance for schools, St Therese was one of the schools they also did some work on.

They were able to remove roofing of the school but unfortunately they were not able to complete the whole classrooms due to lack of time.

Farmers up skill training workshop at Vanuatu Agriculture College

Farmers and students will go through a one week up skill training program facilitated by TVET and Vanuatu Agriculture College.

It is a program of training on raising chicken, pigs, cattle and planting vegetables. And it will take place from the 4th-8th of July 2011.

The Program was officially opened today by speeches from the CEO of Agriculture College, Mr Peter Napwatt and the Acting TVET Team Leader (Sanma), Mr Peter Morris.

Save the Children connects soccer and sexual health

Save the Children Australia(SCA) in Vanuatu donated 46 t-shirts, football shoe bags to the National soccer squad before they departed for Solomon Islands today in preparation for the South Pacific Games (SPG) in August this year. SCORE condoms were also distributed to team members.

“Available evidence shows that while many young people are aware of HIV and STIs, they do not have access to condoms or the knowledge to practice safe sex.” Country Director of Save the Children, Nichola Krey said.

Visit by the original Wilkins

Daily Post was pleased to meet a pioneer of the Lakatoro station, Central District Number 2, and the bearer of the name Wilkins to the New Hebrides, in Port Vila this week.

Darvall Wilkins OBE was an administrative officer in the Condominium from 1957 to 1977 and started the Lakatoro headquarter of the British government for the CD2 district which totally embraced the present Malampa Province.
