Re: your poll Westminster/Presidential system of Government

Dear Editor,

My answer to the Poll would be Yes and No, because I think a mix of the 2 systems may be the answer.

There was an article on ABC Radio about problems with the Westminster system creating instability in a number of countries in the Pacific, not just Vanuatu.
My suggestion is that our experts look at a system whereby we the people elect a President, and 26 MPs, from only 3 political parties, and no Independents.

Police increase surveillance on illegal fishing activity

The Vanuatu Police through its Maritime Wing is increasing police surveillance in Vanuatu’s 12 miles territorial waters and Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) on illegal fishing activities.

“We have information and reports from the outer islands, especially in south Malekula, south Maewo and Pentecost of boats fishing illegally,” Commander Maritime (COMAR) Superintendent John Taleo revealed .

KAFE demands two seats in parliament

The Vanuaaku Party Natapei faction in Tafea Outer Islands (KAFE) is calling for an additional seat in the National Parliament. Currently Tafea Outer Islands has one seat in Parliament.

The Regional Committee of the VP Natapei faction in Tafea outer islands has been meeting in Port Vila last week. One of the outcomes of the meeting is a call for the government to add one more seat for Tafea Outer Islands in the National Parliament.

Vt600,000 worth equipment stolen from boat

Police are investigating allegations that over AUS $ 6360 (Vt600,000) worth of equipment and goods have been stolen from a sailing catamaran while it was under the care of the Port Vila Boatyard.

Stolen items included an outboard engine, tools, bottles of spirits, satellite communication system equipment, kitchen utensils, and snorkeling equipment.
Some equipment not stolen were found to be damaged.

The boat, a sailing catamaran named ‘Wishful thinking’ is owned by an Australian National, Mattingley Christopher.

Justice minister urges swift perjury investigations

The Minister for Justice and Social Welfare has called on police to speed up their investigations on perjury allegations against Prime Minister Sato Kilman, himself and colleague state ministers.

“We are asking the Police to speed up the investigation and process the case so we can get to the bottom of the allegations and clear our names,” said Justice Minister Regenvanu.

The justice minister expressed the wish for Police to thoroughly but advance the investigations when he supplied the Police with four statements from his colleague ministers who are being investigated Tuesday.

Mele in the process of appointing paramount chief

The Supreme Court has ordered and directed the Mele Village Council to meet by June 30, 2011 to settle procedures according to custom for the appointment and ordination of the Paramount Chief of Mele Village.

The Supreme Court also ordered and directed that Mele Village Council makes necessary arrangements in order for the appointment and ordination of the Paramount Chief to take place before 31st October 2011.

Copra beach price increases to Vt65,000

The beach price for copra has gone up today by Vt65,000 per ton.

The copra beach price was down over the past weeks but has gone up again yesterday.

The new beach copra price rise was confirmed to Daily Post yesterday by the Chairman of the Vanuatu Commodities Marketing Board (VCMB) Jonathan Sisae who is now in Port Vila.

“The Copra Beach price has dropped over the past weeks. The new Beach price for copra is up again Monday June 27 and now is Vt65,000 per ton,” the Chairman of the VCMB Jonathan Sisae revealed to Daily Post yesterday morning.
