VP President Natapei takes backseat

Vanua’aku Pati turned a new page in its history on Easter Sunday when its President allowed his young Members of Parliament assume ministerial portfolios while the President became an ordinary government backbencher.

Former PM Natapei, who was stabbed in the back by deposed Prime Minister Sato Kilman had every reason to see Mr Kilman ousted because Mr Kilman allegedly “betrayed the trust” Natapei accorded him as Deputy Prime Minister during his term at the helm.

Natapei waited four months before he finally got his revenge last Sunday, April 24.

Vanuatu joining a sinking ship called the WTO

Dear Editor,

Allow me to reflect on a good article by VANGO in DP issue no 3218.

In addition to the democratic legitimacy of Vanuatu's WTO accession process, there is the question of institutional legitimacy of WTO itself. The Doha round of negotiations started in 2001 and are to conclude in 2011.

The Doha round of negotiations are at an impasse because the EU and the US have increased their agricultural subsidies instead of reducing the same.
With the crisis in Europe and the USA, there is little if any prospect that EU or USA will commit to reducing agricultural subsidies.

Youths want stability

A representative of youths in Port Vila has said young people are tired of political instability.

Eugene Melep who lives in Fresh Wota said young people are not happy to see the constant change of government and political instability.
“It seems politicians are constantly fighting for power for their own personal interests.

“We are tired of seeing such politics because it has existed since 1980.

“Our leaders are not portraying a good example to young people who want to enter politics in the future.

The Eagles have landed

Five young and famous, yet humble Fijian siblings from Pacific Harbour glided in on Eagles Wings to land quietly in Port Vila last December without the knowledge of the media.

But as sure as the sun rises each morning, they started to fan the environment with their spiritual, soothing voices so successfully that they are bombarded with gifts from their ni Vanuatu fans wherever they perform.

UMP’s patience pays off as party remains solid

The Union of Moderate Parties (UMP) leader, Serge Vohor, has played his cards well in a strategy that has not only resulted in the party securing the post of prime minster but also it is expected to have a positive effect for his political group in the general election next year.

Among the big political parties, UMP is the only party that has no visible division among its leaders.

The party secured eight members of parliament in the 2008 general election, second highest from Vanua’aku Party.

These eight MPs were secured in four out of Vanuatu’s six provinces.

MP Samsen joins Labour Party

Member of Parliament for Santo Rural, Samson Samsen, officially confirmed his affiliation to Labour Party of Deputy Prime Minister, Joshua Kalsakau, yesterday afternoon.

MP Samsen made this move less than a week after he and three other MPs withdrew from the Vanuatu Republican Party.

In a short ceremony between Samsen and the Labour Party, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Public Utilities and Infrastructure, who is also President of the Labour Party welcomed the Santo MP into his party.

Women elect new President

Thirty women’s groups in Port Vila have elected the Director of Best for Women’s Centre, Lily Hanghangkon the new President of Port Vila Town Council of Women(PVTCW) and Daisy Warsal her Deputy yesterday without any challenge because they were the only two nominated for the top posts.

The election took place in the Ball Room of Le Lagon Hotel after a daylong workshop to review the Vanuatu National Council of Women Constitution on Monday.
